I would love to go to college. I am 20 years old, and when i got out of highschool i had applied to go to a massage therapist school, i was 95 percent done with the application process, the only thing i needed to do was the loan. My father filled out the parent plus loan, to see how much i could get if he co-signed. I had no intentions for him to pay my way through college, I wanted to go to college, so i should pay for it. That's not how the government thinks of it though, your a dependent of your parents until your 23-25, somewhere around there. I was wondering if there is any possible way that i could go to a community college, or any other type of college, where i would be able to get a loan or pay for it myself, without having my parents co-sign. I've been basically dying to go to college for a couple years now, but have been discouraged because of the fact that i would have to have my parents co-sign, i would have to be married, have children, or be a veteran, Please help.
Can't go to college until i'm a Dependent?Hi there! There are still options even if you are dependent. If your father is denied the parent plus loan (because of his credit) you would be eligible for additional federal loans. As a dependent student, you are eligible for at least $3500 in federal loans your first year, $4500 your second year, and $5500 your third and fourth years. With a massage school, you're probably only looking at one to two years of school. If your father is denied the Plus loan, you could get up to an additional $4000 in federal loans (on top of the 3500).
