I want to go on a semester at sea trip next spring, or honestly just some time in the next couple years.However with my current financial situation i get no financial aid from FAFSA and so i would have to fork out around $30,000 after everything is said and done(all from loans) just for one semester at sea.However.. me and my boyfriend are going to get married and though we were going to wait a couple years, we thought it might be worth it to get married before we go on semester at sea so we can file independent under FAFSA (He wants to do sas as well).This will leave us with barely any student loans instead of around 50K of them.. but what is the right way to go about doing this?

We need to figure out when SAS makes you apply for financial aid, when FAFSA needs it, and if it will be possible to get married the end of this year and go on the Spring 2009 trip classified as independents

Also we would like clarification that if we are independent we will get a larger aid package

I have no idea. Maybe it would just be better if you did a summer semester since it is cheaper. The summer semester is just as good. You have the same amazing ship, you still get to meet amazing people, and you still get to go to some great countries. Also(once you are independent), if you work on the ship your tuition is deducted. If you can figure out how to get the money, once you are there, you will forget how hard it was and just be plain ol' happy. Go to the SAS website and talk to the people there they can help. Also, anyone at your school who knows about financial aid. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
