I am a married woman looking for some credit. One problem. I don't have any existing credit to go off of. I checked with my bank (whom we have a checking & savings account with) and they told us we weren't able to be approved at this time. My hubby currently has a school loan out in his name that he doesn't have to pay off until he is graduated. He also has my car loan in his name. So, I thought about checking out some places in MY name. We applied for various store credit cards, and even resorted to Capitol One. We were denied every time. Even a jewelry store won't accept us! We've got TONS of money in our bank. We currently rent an apartment, and all the bills are in MY name. I've only been late on two or three cable bills (does that matter? Even though it never got reported to the collections agency?) Anyone have any good ideas I can try to start building up credit for our future?

The more you apply for credit, the more credit applications appear on your credit history, regardless of whether you actually accepted the loan. Just doing this can ruin your credit history.

Paying any bill late also makes your credit history look pretty awful. End of story. You pay a day late, and it looks bad.

Get a good savings history. If you work, get a record of your payslips for as long as you have been working there, or two years. Get a statement from your landlord saying that you have never been late paying rent. If you go for a loan these might help.
