I'll be applying to schools soon and I'm wondering about how other people are making it work as far as paying for it with jobs and financial aid. Are people really able to just quit work entirely and live on loans and sometimes stipends, etc? Or do most people still work some kind of job no matter what kind of loans they qualify for?
Paying for graduate school, work and loans, etc?I became a teaching assistant, for my department, and was paid for that in both cash and by way of tuition. It didn't pay all of my tuition, but most of it. I was able to eek by, and not have to take on any other jobs by living in a house full of other serious students who needed to live on cheap rent, as well. Good luck!
Paying for graduate school, work and loans, etc?Graduate students have a number of options - but they are much more limited than those available to undergraduate students. You should start with your admissions officer and then move on to the financial aid office. As a grad student, you are independent - meaning this job is no longer your parent's - it is your responsibility to advocate for yourself. You also should talk with your department chair. The majority of free money in grad school comes from assistantships and other forms of on campus work. And then their are loans. Yes - you can borrow and live off loans. You can borrow $18,500 in Stafford loans and the remaining amount up to that total cost of your education from private student loans or the new Federal Graduate PLUS Loan.
