Business Etiquette?You say this as though you aren't aware this is a standard business practice. Is this a Bad Thing? Yes. Is it unethical? Yes. Should a company do it? No.

Business Etiquette?Hmmmm very interesting question. If your manager spoke that intention it would seem her motives could be questionable. However to go to a person's front door with a smile and a request, be welcomed in and offered said request sounds like networking-- common in business, even if the motives are questionable.
I guess there are a few ways to look at it. In a free market, if you treat your employees and customers uncommonly well, they will be loyal to you AND offer the candidates they can not hire because it is good for business to solve problems. If you treat your employees in a manipulative way to get them in your doors you are giving out to the universe what you can expect to receive in return.
