I'm considering joining either the national guard or some branch of the reserves. I'm about to graduate college and really want to serve my country and cash in on great benifits as well as a steady check every month to cover rent or student loans, but would also like to pursue a career in my field. I understand the 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year deal and that I will most likely be called a way for a year or more to serve actively which I'm fine with. But between these times would it be possible to actually have time to pursue a graduate degree as well as pursue my career? I've heard about lawyers that have their own practice AND serve but I don't know if this is typical.
National Guard or Reserves able to hold down a career? It is absolutely possible. Millions have done it before you. Congrats on your desire to serve! The National Guard and reserves are a great way to do so. Personally, I think the National Guard has subtle but important qualities that make it better than the reserves. 1. Both State and Federal benefits 2. A bigger budget (State +Fed) 3. More MOS options (combat arms) 4. the State relief missions.
Whatever you do..good luck and thank you.
National Guard or Reserves able to hold down a career? There are about 1 million reservists and National Guard members who do just this. Pursuing a graduate degree while working a full-time job (and raising a family) is something than many members of the reserves do.
