I'm planning a trip to China in the winter (I'm thinking Feb. to coincide with New Year's) and need some advice! I definately need to visit Chongqing because we have a 'son' that was an exchange student that lived there. I'd like to know your opinions on how to get good rates for plane tickets, decent places to stay, etc. Serious responses only please. I'd love to hear from people that have been there!

Don't buy air ticket in the US, you'll have to pay the full fare then. Once you are in Shanghai or Beijing, you can easily buy discount tickets. I always buy air tickets through C-Trip, it is a Chinese Internet travel agency similar to Travelocity. I have done through them for over 12 years and no one can beat their prices. I came to Chongqing last Saturday, I bought ticket at 50% off. Sometimes, there are 70% off tickets.
OK, you'll now ask how can you buy air tickets when in Beijing or Shanghai, as you want to make only a transit there. What you can do is to purchase the ticket on net, and ask them to leave the tickets at the C-Trip counter at the airport for you to pick up.
For hotels, first you have to find out where you son is, his work place and home, so you can decide where to stay. There are two rivers going through the city, The middle section called Yuzhong, is mainly business districts. I am in Yubei, means north of the river. I arranged a friend to stay at the Days Hotel just few weeks ago, it is owned by Days Inn but is a new 5-star hotel, they paid less than $50 a night with breakfast included. We go to that hotel once a week for their lunch baffet, one of the best in town. When first coming to Chongqing in April, I stayed in a hotel, a simeple but decent one, for $20 a night. With free internet connection, there are many restaurents in the area. So there are hotels in all price range.
