1. You need to get more oxygen when you exercise and you also need to get out the carbon-dioxide your body produces. If you don't get enough O2 your cells will create acid which makes your muscles ache.

2. The alveoli in our lungs create more surface area for in our lungs to allow more blood to pick-up oxygen and drop off CO2.

2) i can't really recall anything specific about the alveoli (i took AP Bio a year ago) but i think it's because it opens and closes on a constant pace. I don't really know what you are asking in the second part of your second question.
