I want to volunteer overseas where the US $ goes far, the weather is decent, the landscape is not depressing, things are not expensive, and there's nothing scary about the place- like deadly animals lurking in everyone's backyards or high crime rates. I'm a 20somethinger female who will be traveling alone and I'm looking for a longer-term (6-12 month) project. If it helps: I have a bachelors, masters, and varied skills. I would prefer a place that doesn't require another language. Although, I speak very basic and broken Spanish and even worse French. The opportunity to learn more is always welcome!

Unfortunately, all of the organizations I've looked up charge for the privilege of volunteering your time. I'm looking for a reputable organization that offers free accommodation and food in exchange for work. Does anyone have any ideas about this or do you have a blog that tells your story?

P.S. I am not looking to volunteer for the PeaceCorps or any other gv'mnt org.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) take in young women for temporary volunteer positions at their four World Centres - Our Chalet, Switzerland; Sangam, India; Our Cabana, Mexico; and Pax Lodge, London. You will get free lodging, food and a small allowance. Check out the website for more information.
