There are so many ATM's that makes them much more convenient.. You could be waiting in a que at a currency exchange window to change a travellers cheque while standing next to a vacant ATM..

The problem with travelers checks is a lot of places will not accept them including some banks.
Using credit cards for most purchases and ATM for cash is still the best way to go.
