Is it normal for my laptop screen to flash/flicker to a black screen?

I just bought a new Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop and as I'm using it the screen will periodically go black for about a second or two and then come right back. Is this normal? Is it okay? It does this almost anytime--when I'm playing games, watching a DVD, etc...
I've been reading stuff online about flicker rates/refresh rates or something, but I couldn't tell if those apply to my situation.
Please help--since I just bought it, I'm hoping if this is a serious problem, I can just return/exchange it. Thanks!
Is it normal for my laptop screen to flash/flicker to a black screen? It is be a number of issues that often occur. The first could be that the programs are simply loading and you may have wait for it on the screen. This is normal behavior, especially when it's loading a program, tasks, or instructions. It's needs time to process it. Just in case though, I suggest that you get a back-ups for your programs or documents that you may want to restore. If the moniter is going go poof on you, it best if you have your files on a cd or dvd. A flash drive would be the best because you can back-up your documents quickly. The only other thing that I could think of to cause the screen to go black is that the computer may not be charged enough and you may have to shut down and let it recharge. I do not know how long you use it at time, but long periods of gaming will sap the battery quicker, especially on the online. Connect your charger and will run from that.
