Hi,
I recently purchasised a JR pass from the only reseller available in the country where I live.
There price was ~US$25 more expensive than it's cost JPY28300 with current echange rate.
Of couse I asked why, and they explained that they have a fixed exhange rate to make some profit on this.
It means, 10% more expensive than nominal price.
According to the JR pass webpage:
"(...) are yen prices for a JAPAN RAIL PASS Exchange Order; the actual cost in local currency is calculated at the time the Exchange Order is issued"
Are they allowed take whatever exchange rate they want?to sell JR pass this way? I was hoping to get an answer from somebody who knows the rules applied for JR pass resellers.
I'd prefer if they said "we take handling fee"......

I totally agree with you.
I had same problem. My travel agent said to me that the JPY price on JR website is what JR takes and travel agents had to make profit on that.
I cannot see any logic behind this operation. I might ask someone in Japanese language forums about this when I have spare time.
JR pass price and exchange rate used - too bad rate!?What country do you live in?
