I have just recently put together a Salt-Water 46G Salt Water Aquarium, with a 20G Sump. The tank is drilled and no wires needs to go out of the top of the tank. The flow rate is pretty fast (about 20x an hour).
I have a All-Glass (Versa-Top) hood on the aquarium right now (with lighting above). I read that it's good to keep the aquarium covered to limit evaporation loss and prevent suicidal fish. The lid is tight on the tank and no air circulation can occur.
The sump is uncovered and all natural air exchanged I assume will be taken care from that. However is there any reason I should cut a few holes in the Versa-Top to allow for circulation in the main tank (smell)? I know most have some holes in the top (since they have wires or tubes going into their tank) if I do not have this should I still add Air-Vents to my canopy? With no air-vents the sound is limited from the feed line (standpipe) to my sump... but I do not want this to be a factor on what will make the fish happiest.
Salt-Water Aquarium - Air Vent Needed in Hood? There isn't a reason to cut any holes. I have glass tops on my 90 gallon to prevent fish jumping. This is my main reason, as evaporation will still happen from the sump. I lose around 1/2 gallon a day actually.
Now the only 'hole like' areas on my tops is the plastic lining on the back (it sits up a tiny bit), and the two tiny holes for my powerheads running in. I've never had any other issues, just have to clean my tops all the top (they have residue on them). I use vinegar for cleaning, then wipe with RO/DI water.
My fish all seem to be happy, there is still surface agitation, and a lot of flow.
