My son is graduating from High school next month and decided to join the Army. He is a straight A student and decided to have the military pay for his college after his five year enlistment. The closer it gets to him leaving for Basic Training - the more I worry about it being the wrong decision - for obvious reasons (Iraq etc.). Let's assume that I could change his mind and could talk him into going to college instead - would it be too late for him to get into an accredited institution this fall? Any ideas or suggestions anyone? Where could he go, what could we do to get him in a good college fast? We live in Houston, TX. Also, how and where do you apply for student loans?
College vs. Army?Try everything in your power not to let him go. So what that the government will pay for his college costs after five years, he will be so traumatized that it will not matter. My brother is in the air force and he made the exact same decision---it came out to be a wrong one.
If he already enlisted and you both are desperate to get him out (HE MAY GO TO IRAQ!!!!) you can go and claim that he is gay (they will take him out) or claim that he has a history with weed (they will take him out). Try everything in your power to get him out; it doesn't matter what you say as long as it works. The two recommendations above will work!
If you cannot pay for college he can go to a junior college which is so much cheaper or talk to his school counsels for school scholarships--they will probably help him.
