I don't think there is much you can do know if he is leaving for basic training that means he is enlisted and does not have a choice.

I think it's too late for him to change his mind if he has already enlisted in the Army.

Take my advice if he wants to go to the army and let the army pay for his school than let him. As you may know the army kind of sucks a little but it changed my life. You have to look at it, it will teach you how to be tough,discipline and etc. I know that the war isn't looking to tough but check into it before you let him run off. Plus did you know that the army pays you while you in there and look at the bright side he can get his own car and when he gets out in 4 years or so he will be able to own his own home and etc. Its so many advances that you not aware of. Also look at it if you want to help him go to college with bill and room and board and etc than if you ready for all that than thats cool to but the best colleges is the one thats up the road where he can't get into alot of trouble but he can have fun with serioritys and step team maybe even basketball. Financial aide is available through Sallie Mae but go to Yahoo home page and type in Students Loans and read about it and than you can also talk to your son about the things he might want to do cause once he has join the army there is no turning back. If my daughter decides to go off to the army than i would let her cause thats the experience she gonna learn for herself but you can't always hold them back set them free and trust me they will never forget what you have tought them.Do some thinking but don't think to hard.Good Luck
