So...how do lower-tiered law grads make it? Well, most don't. That is the truth, although few will be honest about that fact. Those who do tend to have the exact same job, although it varies by name, depending on where you are in the country and the employer. This job has a reasonable expectation of income between 70k and 105k your first year out. It is boring, tedious, and affords you no respect. Most people with this job are miserable and have a chip on their shoulders the size of Mt. Rushmore. What is this job? Contract attorney or staff attorney.
Now, many people will tell you many things about being a contract attorney. The truth is that it is what you make it and that people tend to respond to outsiders according to their relative position with respect to this group. Career counselors and placement agents will tell you that it is no longer "the kiss of death" to your career. Associates will tell you that it is a job for people who really are not serious about being attorneys, are on the "mommy track" or who have other interests. Partners at law firms will say that they are the hidden secret to the business of law that accounts for a huge share of big law firm profits.
The truth is that nobody goes to law school wanting to be a contract attorney. Nobody sits for the bar hoping to become one. Nobody "decides" to do it. Period. Financial realities just merely place people in the following situation: become one or destroy your financial fitness, thereby calling to question your ability to subsequently waive into other bars, among other considerations.
