I would be livid if furniture I bought was in that condition after only four years. Unfortunately, the quality of manufactured goods (retailers buying from overseas plants) has gone through the floor. There's no pride anymore. That said, it's your call. Before you start throwing things out, check out the price of having the sofa/chairs reupholstered. Check out the place first, ask friends, etc. Good places will give good quality work. (Or you could get a book or two and do the job yourselves.) It's usually less than replacing with new. Also, coffee tables and end tables could be refinished or painted giving them new looks without the new price.

Why dont' you try ''craigslist'' for used furniture. There are lots of great bargains. Also try antique or used furniture stores. They have some very unique items.

Check out hgtv.com and go to the message boards for ways to refinish or paint older furniture and make it look great.

Your home should be comfortable to you; not a place you dread visiting because of poor furniture. Decide on what type of theme you want for the living room, and buy pieces as you can afford them. Go to a reputable furniture dealer and buy quality pieces that will hold up. My mother has stuff from the 1950's when she got married, and they moved every three years with the Army.
