Can you explain the following glitches...?
A: If you are watching a dvd, when suddenly the picture freezes. You have to press Fast Forward to move the story on.
B: you are watching a dvd, then suddenly the picture freezes/breakes up into small pixels.
C: a dvd refuses to load in the player, when it used to before.
All these things happened to my dvds when I loaned them to other people. I've now decided to stop lending my dvds to other people, as these things never happen to dvds I haven't (luckily) lent to others.
Thanks.
What are the causes of DVD glitches and how can you repair them, if possible? The laser in a DVD player generates a light beam that is reflected off the disk as it turns. The reflection carries the data info recorded on the DVD back to a detector which sends it to circuits that convert the data pulses into video and audio for use by the TV set. A weak laser will sometimes cause problems like you are seeing. These age with time and do get dirty so that the beam is dimmer. There are cleaner disks available, but I do not know if these are worth the rather nominal cost. They probably will not hurt anything, but may not help either.
I would be careful if you do open up the mechanism and try to clean things. The laser alignment is critical and you could do more damage than correction. Another easy solution is to pick up one of the very low cost DVD players now available at Sams, etc. (about $40 new) and just use it if you have a disk that will not play on the older unit.
