Sounds like dirt or damage to the surface of the DVD. You can get specialised cleaners. The best advice I can give is to make a copy of the dvd's you relly want to keep & use the copies to watch, this will keep your original in perfect nick. I made copies of my bellydance DVDS as I want to be able to use for a long time.
