Perhaps (if you like criminal law) you should do criminal justice and stay along the lines of paralegal. The paralegal program shouldn't take that long, and most community colleges offer the first couple of years if not the entire program, not to mention most community colleges have the best prices without sacrificing educational quality. There is a lot of work involved in the actual job, but it's as close to a degree-holding desk job in the criminal justice field one can get.

Business with a major in accounting. If you are worried about high fees why not get a degree from a world class university without paying enormoous amounts of money? The University of London has exam centers throughout the World so you do not have to go to London to take exams. I did exams with the external course which enabled me to become a lawyer without going to University full time.Have a look here: http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/ Best of luck. You could also prepare and take the CPA exams if you want but you will have to find out the regs from the local branch of the CPAs.

Many colleges offer aptitude courses or tests, I would suggest trying one of those and see where your interests lie. If you have interests in Computer related work, then try out some programming courses. I would stick with Microsoft technologies, .net, etc. You should be able to get an entry level position with some knowledge base. Then once you get some experience under your belt, at least a couple of years, you will be able to make some good money. There are also technical jobs where you would be able to work from home, and if you are single mom that could be an added plus. But you would require experience before that would become a reality. Might also look at business analysis courses, or project coordination. In the next 10 years their will be a serious need for IT folks in the US. The market is already changing and their many jobs and limited workers. Once the baby boomers start to retire the need will increase. Good luck on your new adventure.
