The restaurants I have worked at have ALWAYS served the butter on the side. Waiters and kitchen staff aren't mind readers, they don't know if the customer wants just a little bit of butter or a lot. I personally just like the merest scrape of butter on my toast and prefer to do it myself. It sounds to me like this woman just likes to complain, with all the stress going on in her family shes just taking it out on someone who can't answer back.

first of all, GET OVER IT! many times a server will bring condiments on the side because these days, just about everyone wants everything "on the side". general rule as a server, you can never go wrong with that. this is not something to complain to management about. get your priorities straight. we are servers, not servants.
