I am thinking of going out of state to possibly South Carolina to teach elementary school. I had heard about the loan forgiveness, but I can't seem to find any information. I would appreciate any info anyone can give me. Thanks!

If you were a full-time teacher for five consecutive academic years in a "low-income" school, you could qualify for a federal loan forgiveness program.

To qualify, you must:

-have taught full time for five consecutive complete academic years in an elementary or secondary school that was designated a "low-income" school by the U.S. Department of Education.

And ...

-At least one of the qualifying years of teaching was after the 1997鈥?998 academic year.

-Your loan was made before the end of the fifth year of qualifying teaching.

-The school must be public or private nonprofit.

A hand full of States will refund a partial amount of your tuition. First, you must graduate with a teaching degree. They won't cover student loans that are devoted to housing & living expenses. Look under 'higher education' at each State's web site.

For Stafford Loans if you have taught 5 years (what you must do to qualify is attached to the application):

Perkins Loans can be up to 100% of the loan and does not require 5 years of teaching nor do you have to teach full time. You apply for the forgiveness at the school to which you took the Perkins Loan as they administer the loan.

You can also check with the state that you move to and see if they offer any loan forgiveness programs.
