I would like to apply for the forgiveness program for teachers but I do not have any data on any of my loans as to dates and whom I borrowed from. Where do I go to get the correct data to see if I qualify for the program?
I need a listing of all my loans dating to the nineteen eighty's.?This is a lot simpler than you think. The Department of Education houses a large database -- called the National Student Loan Data System -- that keeps track of each students' federal student loans. Student and Financial Aid Administrators can both view your detailed loan history on this website.
To access the site, you will need a PIN number from the Dept. of Ed. To apply for a PIN (assuming you don't already have one, which you might if you're filed a FAFSA lately), you can go to http://www.pin.ed.gov. It might take a few days, but the information you get from this site will prove valuable. Once you have your PIN, go to http://www.nslds.ed.gov and log in to view your history. Among other things, the site will tell you:
* your original loan amounts
* current outstanding balance
* when the loan was first disbursed
* interest rate
* your repayment status (i.e. are you in good standing or in default)
* name of lender
* name of guarantor
* name of servicer (i.e. the party that bills you)
This should be all the information you need to apply for Teacher Loan forgiveness. Keep in mind, though, that the amounts and criteria for loan forgiveness varies by loan program.
