From the DOE, get a comprehensive list of all loans currently associated with your SS#; 2) From the past universities/colleges, get a list of all loans associated with your SS# at the time of the original release of funds; 3) Get as many records of payments you've made from the various lenders to make sure that all the payments/consolidations, etc. have been recorded correctly. From this information you should be able to create a history of the loans and what happened to them (where they went, how they were paid, where they are now).
This will take some time. Hopefully, in your case it will be straightforward. However, if gets complicated I'd hire an accountant to help me sort it out. Either way, please post your answer when you finally do find out.
