I am disabled, and I have received a lawsuit from my old college, who is suing me for my school loans. I have tried to tell them that I'm permanently disabled, so that my loans would be forgiven. Every time I applied for that, I found that they had given me the wrong or expired paperwork- so I never got that loan forgiveness. Now I am being summoned to court about this loan.
I have been told several times that since my only income is SSi and SSDI they cannot win a judgment against my benefits. Is this true?
I have tried to get a lawyer from legal aid and legal services, but legal aid refused to help and legal services doesn't return my phone calls.
I live in New York City.
I'm Disabled and on Social Security- Can I be sued?Im not sure how it works with SSI and such but I get VA benefits due to disability and my college (THEY made the mistake of telling me my semester was paid for and gave me my books which werent supposed to be given to me if my semester wasnt paid for. I dropped out when they called me to the office the FIRST day of the semester.) threatened with suing me as well and I ended up having to pay it. One thing you could do if it comes down to you having to pay...send a check and make it an amount you can afford each month if they cash the check they HAVE to accept that amount monthly and cannot come after you for more as long as you continue paying it.
