Is there loan forgiveness like other health care fields? I want to go into OT, but the loans would be as much as PA. PA's make more money, even though that is not my motive. I just really do not like being tied down by debt.
Thank you.
Occupational Therapy? When you get out of school, you will have debt (which is what I will have) but most employers will offer to pay for your loans or give you bonuses. Occupational Therapy school is so expensive, and employers are probably aware of this, so they will offer these perks to you.
I chose this field not knowing exactly what OT was and now that I am in the program, it is well worth the cost of tuition! OTs can find a job just about anywhere, I think there is also a high level of job satisfaction. Evaluate what career you think matches your passion and personality and go for it!
Occupational Therapy? No, I never found a loan forgiveness program, HOWEVER, I also went to school in Texas (UTMB). Being that it's a public university, and in Texas, I graduated with only $11,000 debt, which was very easy to pay off, ? $100 month for 10 years? I don't remember to well, but it was not hard. Anyway, that would be my recommendation, look into less expensive states, and NO ONE will ever care where you graduated from, so don't spend you money on private expensive schools such as USC. The education that you get in school is only a foundation, in the OT field your value comes from your experience, not your schooling.
One more note, also for the OT student... steer clear of employers willing to pay off your loans!!!!!! If they can't find an OT to work for them, it's for a good reason!!! Trust me, no new grad OT should ever work in a setting without a mentor!! Take a pay cut, but start of working in a reputable place! It will pay off in the future, like I said, no one cares about schooling, but they are impressed by experience.
