I am a 4th year clinical psychology graduate student considering an internship with the Air Force. My understanding is that I would start out as a Captain, and I would owe an additional 3 years after my initial internship year. Also, after liscensure, I'm eligible for 25,000/year in federal loan forgiveness.

Has anyone served in such a capacity? What was your impression?

Psychology Internship in the Air force?

I haven't worked at an Air Force internship, but I did consider it and I've talked to people who have.

I have to admit that the money was a big draw. It pays more than twice that of traditional internships and has good benefits. However, I decided not to apply after I discovered that over 75% of new graduates will be deployed overseas for their postdoctoral year. This could be indefinite. I wasn't interested in being separated from my family that long.

The people who have worked at the Air Force internship have found it to be pretty good. I've attended 2 trainings at military internships with some pretty well-known people in the field of psychological testing. So, the training and dydactics appear to be better than you would get elsewhere. You also get a pretty wide range of clients, problems, and experience.

Psychology Internship in the Air force?

i have not served in this capacity...my husband was in the air force and i am a psych...so i can tell you a little about both...the air force will tell you what you want to hear...listen carefully to the missing words...they do this all the time to people and say they are not lying because the people are eligible for this or can do that...well you can...but you don't...right now where are the soldiers who need assistance with mental health or counseling issues? that is where you would go...you would only be a captain so you wouldn't have seniority and you would get a worse placement then someone with more time...i'm not saying it is bad...just know the facts...all of them before you take the jump and if you are willing..more power to you...and i seriously mean that...i think it would be a very challenging career...just keep your sights firm...good luck
