Agree, JP. It's called "rampant consumerism", and this is what I do to combat it.
I have never been in a Walmart store, and never will. Not if I starve to death---I'll do it to make my point! ;) When we need to make a purchase, it's from a LOCALLY-OWNED store, so that our dollars will be reinvested into the local economy.
My husband, his family and I built our own home, and borrowed the capitol to do so (and have since repaid) from a family member.
We grow approximately 50% of our own food. (Not feasible for everyone, but we have vast veggie and fruit yields annually.)
We drive smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles and we drive them until they DIE.
I use a credit card ONLY for online purchases, and I pay it off every month.
In the end, WE are responsible for our own financial well-being. It's not necessary to have everything we want in life immediately; our society does very little to encourage impulse-control, because that's what keeps Big Business afloat.

I worked for a few years as a sub-prime mortgage analyst and was horrified by what I saw! Of course there are those in the geriatric crowd that depended on Social Security for their entire retirement and needed to take the equity out of their homes to make ends meet. That was heartbreaking for me and I would often wave all my fees because they were desperate.
