Hi,
I have a young friend who is the first in his family to attend college. He's worried because he's used most of his options for financial aid (federal loans and grants) and still has a significant balance to pay. His financial aid officer told him that the only option at this point is a cosigned loan from a banking institution, which is next to impossible. Does anyone know about alternative options? Your suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks
Financial Aid Options for College Students? If your friend is a good student then, they may be eligible to apply for scholarships and grants. At my school, the financial aid office has a bunch for students to apply for and they match you up with the ones that fit you. For example i was awarded a first generation scholarship for being the first in my family to go to college. Also if you are a minority, or even a women there may be specific ones for you. Also there may be scholarship specific to the major you go into.
Financial Aid Options for College Students? He's going to need to get that loan, but it doesn't necessarily need to be cosigned. A cosigned loan will cost less in the long run (interest rates and such), but if his parents have bad credit he may have no choice. I got a loan from campusdoor.com. It seems like they'll give money to anyone.
Remember, I'm not trying to advertise this site. Make sure to check the interest rates, as they are most likely higher. Tell him to search for the best deals at other institutions, but if he can't get it anywhere else, try there.
