40 years ago I picked up a book in the school library that had an illustration on the front of a Horatio Nelson-looking character. I read the first page or so, and then put the book back intending to loan it later. Of course, it wasn't there when I came back for it. From my recollection, the first page was about a naval officer on the deck of a ship at night, talking with a sailor. The sailor wishes him 'good luck' as the ship's bell sounds for midnight. At first the officer is taken back by what might be insubordination or overfamiliarity, but then he realises that it was New Year's eve. As well as the start of a new year, it is also the start of a new century. 1800.
That's all I recall. The style of the work seems similar to CS Forrester. It predates Patrick O'Brien. I'm wondering if it might have been one of Forrester's Hornblower novels. Anyone??
Name of book/author?Sounds like a Hornblower novel. I read them a long time ago.
Name of book/author?it sounds like one of the Hornblower novels to me too, there are so many of them. It might also be one of the Flashman novels (pretty much the same thing, just funnier)
Name of book/author?Sounds like a Frank Sallinger novel to me.
