is it not pure greed from young australians that stop them from affording their first home? I am a loans officer for a major bank and everyday we are faced with the same scenario - young couple wanting new built home in good area - they won't consider anything smaller, cheaper or older - and when we look at the financial status - two new cars, numerous cd stacks, tv,s, computers, toys (like boats, motorbikes) - a lot of this is on credit because they don't want to wait and save - and then they wonder why they can't afford the mortgage repayments ( most boast of the most wonderful overseas honeymoon) - it all seems like a cushion - what has happened to the good old battler spirit which has been the australian foundation - I am not old - in my 40's - so these comments are not out of touch - its time we realised how greedy we have become and put some of the blame back on our own shoulders - now thats the australian spirit - isn't it?

Its not a coincidence that younger people are wanting more. We have a money hungry prime minister following an even bigger money hungry president all making sure that money is the most important thing in our life. I cannot get a old townhouse for under 260 000 anywhere on the gold coast. I want to start like you suggest but its not about the house anymore its about the location. Any thing within an hour of the coast is heavely over priced. Release more land, reducing the demand and therefore the cost. Its simple and works making if affordabble.
