try to call the companies that your cleared the defaults with and ask them to remove the accounts from your credit report or post it as paid satisfactorily.

Paying one bill on time has got to be better than having half a dozen bills coming in and being late with one or even two of them.
If it is of any consolation to you I have a similar problem but in reverse.
I have no credit and therefore I have no credit rating so when I go into shops I get turned down because I am an unknown risk.

My credit rating is awful.?It takes more than a few months to improve your credit score. The defaults are probably still pulling it down even though they are paid. This is why keeping a clean credit record is so importatant. It takes years to build a good name but only a few months to ruin it. It is never a good idea to consolidate on a high interest rate loan. If you can take advantage of some of the offers you recieve for lower rate cards do that and consolidate on one of those. The catch is that you have to always pay on time - every time or your interest rate can soar. Usually the low introductory rate is for only a year or so - but by that time you can transfer the balance to another card with an low introductory rate. Just don't take on any new debt and pay this off as soon as you can. I've used this strategy and it has paid off well for me.
