Hi, I am dreaming of a career as an Airline Pilot, however...I am from a very poor family. My parents are too ill to work, so they are on DLA etc and are always short of money and in debt. I cannot get a full time job because I am a full time student at college claiming EMA. I live in a council house and have no property to secure a mortgage/loan against....to fund my flight training. I have worked out an estimate of approximately 拢100k including living costs, books, lessons etc. Because of my situation.....I doubt I will ever be able to self fund my training. The only airline im the UK I am aware of that does a sponsorship scheme is easyJet....and even then, I need to give them 拢60k up front (which they pay back when I'm working for them) and I still need money for living costs etc. The rest of the airlines have closed there sponsorship schemes and only accept Direct Entry pilots (self funded). I was oringinally going to join the RAF as a pilot and then get a type conversion....cont.
Financial assistance?Sorry about your eyesight. Have you had a formal optometry assessment against the RAF A1 criteria. Do you know you can't meet it. Are you sure you can meet the criteria for initial civilian class 1 medical?.
As for the money, I think you have already discovered there is pretty much no free flying training outside the military. There are Air Cadets flying scholarships and the University Air Squadrons (UAS), but these both require RAF medical category. If you can join a UAS when you get to uni, you might get up to 60 hours military flying training without being committed to join the RAF.
