Something wasn't adding up when i did my taxes and since this is the first time I've done them I'm worried. I am using Turbo Tax online. I don't own a house, single, 22, don't have loans just think of me as a part time student who works in the summer and winter. My wages came to $10,807 with $1047.70 withheld in federal income tax. My refund comes out to $844. I also recorded $2,977 I made through unemployment with $299 fed income withheld since I made my unemployment income taxable On last years return I only got back $576 yet I made $10,806 with $1,144 withheld.
I didn't do my taxes last year, a family member did. So can I really be making almost $300 more this year or am I doing something wrong? I just don't want to get into trouble. On my EZ form last year it says the following in line 5: If no one can claim you enter $8,450 if single but the person who did my taxes entered $5,150 in that line.
Did a mistake on my 1040EZ screw me over last year?Hi. The family loved one whom did your taxes last year did the 1040EZ correctly, it appears. Last income tax season (2006), the standard deduction was 5150. That's where he arrived at the 5150. If you were a full-time student, someone [your parents, quite possibly] was providing over 50% of your support.
This year, you were a part-time student and you made upwards of 3400.00. If you provided over 50% of your support, for sure the exemption is yours. If your parents want to claim you, the IRS has a formula as to whom receives the exemption.
