I have applied several times for a card other than the 'cash card' I already have with Nationwide, and each time have been refused. The only 'black marks' on my credit history I can think of are my student loan (which is not supposed to affect your credit rating), and an unauthorised overdraft 5 years ago, due to the theft and fraudulent use of my debit card with another bank.

Nationwide give no explanation of this refusal. I currently have my salary paid into the account, as I am living abroad and it is free to withdraw money.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem? How can I find out why I am being refused? I have tried to check my credit status online with Experian, but as I am registered living at my Mum's house in the UK, I do not have any bills in my name to prove my address.

nationwide seem particularly stringent on debit cards. they wouldnt give me one because of my previous bankruptcy.

ok but for the fact I got one from the halifax and have credit cards now.

did you know that even applications for credit "count" on your history. even negative responses are added to your file and are taking into consideration by future banks etc. Be careful! but get your credit report from experian or similar... only costs 拢2.
