You might also call the local police department - in our area, we will tow your car if you can't show insurance but the police will normally call your agent to verify. I have seen the police waive the impound fees if they were wrong. In your situation, it might not hurt to ask!

i doubt with a repo one month ago, you will be able to count on the dealer's help.

Most DMV computer systems do NOT have expiration dates of insurance policies listed and some do NOT even list whether the vehicle has insurance.
The vehilce was NOT impounded incorrectly. The majority of the States require that you carry at least a copy of your insurance card with you while the car is being driven.
At this point, the only thing you can do, is make a photocopy of the insurance card and answer the ticket (if you got one) not guilty - and provide the proof of insurance. With regars to the impound fee, you will still be liable for this. Sorry.
