Has anyone ever been contacted by a private investigator by the name of Rich Franklin? This sounds like a scam.. Never pay a debt collector via MoneyGram. What state do you live? Most states have laws regarding the practices of these companies... As someone stated earlier, there is no such debtor's prison. Now, be mindful, you could in reality owe $584. If their contract (fine print) said they could charge you for collection fees, interest, etc and all that, you are liable. This investigator is someone fake who is trying to "ruffle" your feathers...
The next time you receive a call from this "Rich Franklin", find out if he works for the payday loan place or if he is an outside collector.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act covers 3rd party debt collections, not original party debt collections. However, most states addressed this gap in the law by writing state laws regarding collection of debts..
