... and how do I handle the following situations that I've already put myself in?
1) I loaned one of my employees $100, 6 months ago. He was going to pay me back in one week. I have reminded him once a month since then. Everytime he says ok but then does nothing about it. I don't think he intends to pay me back.
2) I have a friend that consistantly borrows $5 - $150 from me right before his paycheck arrives. He always promptly pays me back on his payday. I feel guilty if I say no because he has four kids. But I got frustrated the other day because he bought an ipod and then the next day asked me to borrow money for groceries. I feel guilty if I say no because he has four kids but this guy is treating me like a revolving credit line.

"and respond... now i know how you feel! I have NO money right now.... perhaps... a lesson could be learned by them too... if they see you get out of this "fictious" debt that you are currently in??

What is the best way to politely say "no" to loan requests from friends or coworkers?...?The first guy, being an employee, you need to sit down and spell it out for him. Tell him he is to pay you back $50 this paycheck and $50 next. PERIOD.
The other guy, there is no reason for you to feel guilty. His finances are NOT your responsibility, and you should feel free to tell him that if he can buy an iPod (when he has FOUR KIDS!!!!) then he can afford to make it to his next paycheck. His poor money skills are not up to you to solve.
