To make this quick. My husband has a very common name. For the last 13 years we have been dealing with this. In 1985 the social security sent his card to a different person with his same name and birthdate in our state. For years this guy used his number for student loans,credit cards and anything you would use your number for. My husband has a CDL and has this other guys DUI's on his record! We sent in fingerprints and they said it wasnt his charges but just noted he may have been a victim of identuty theft. He has not gotten jobs because of this. We have had to pay a lawyer to stop judgements against us for this other guys loans. We are still trying to have the $20,000 in student loans removed. The IRS sent us a letter in 1999 that another taxpayer filed with the same number,I belive he then realized ut wasnt his number and they sent him his original number and it left all his debt on my husband! Any advice?? Can I sue the social security for this? It has been ruining our lives!

People routinely and stupidly give out their SS numbers to almost anyone who asks.

Our government once again has tricked it's citizens. If you look on the card it says "Not for identification purposes" The reason it says it is because the american people balked at establishing SS until the government made a solemn promise this would never be used for anything other than social security taxes and payments. THEY LIED

I would hope you could sue them for their original misrepresentations (lies) and their negligence in sending it to the wrong address. Good Luck
