Maximum Heart Rate can be calculated by several different formulas with the most common being (220 - age).

I want to know what this maximum heart rate actually means.?

I've asked around at the gym (staff and fellow exercisers) and heard several different answers:

- The point at which you will have a heart attack.

- The point at which you will pass out.

- The point at which you start doing damage to your heart.

I'm not sure that any of these are actually correct.

If you know the answer, I would also appreciate any references (web sites or whatever) that can back you up.

Thanks.

MHR (or MHmax) is simple. It is:

The greatest number of times per minute the heart is capable of beating safely; or

The fastest and hardest your heart can pump without going into fibrillation. Rate differs according to age.
