Can you get loans for college if your parents wont help you before your 24?You can absolutely get loans on your own. All you have to do is fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This will also tell you what federal grants you qualify for.
You can do it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
You'll have to use the tax information from you parents as long as they claim you as a dependent, but the loans will be in your name and your parents will NOT have to cosign or be responsible for repaying them. Once you claim yourself as independent from your parents (meaning they don't provide the majority of your income) you will use your own tax information. This is also a form you will have to fill out every year that you are in college. You need to do it ASAP, though, because I believe the deadline is March 1st.
I supported myself and paid for my college degree this way and I'm going through the process again to pay for law school. I just turned 24. The only time you would need a co-signer for a loan is if you take a private loan, which you should only do if your totally desperate and the Federal loans don't cover your tuition because the interest rates are siginificantly higher on private loans.
You should also contact the financial aid department at the college you're planning on attending. They will tell you everything they require and, in some cases, even help you fill out the forms. They are a great resource.
